Asymmetric information occurs when insiders have more information than investors. Managers can manipulate the company’s earnings using accounting standards that allows discretionary decisions for accrual basis and makes judgments following these principles. Managers can use the discretion for earnings management to reach target income, avoid debt covenant violation and smooth income for attracting investors and receiving higher offer price.
