Abstract: |
This research aims to study the environmental management’s competency level and comparative study of environmental management processes of 2-study group between the 7-business sector in listed companies of the stock exchange of Thailand (SET) and Industrial companies in Maptaphut industrial Estate in Rayong Province (Maptaphut). Analyzing 7 organizational factors and 13 environmental management processes factors with 188 sub-issues affecting the environmental management’s competence level, the sampling data collected and statistical analyzed from 101 companies of SET in 2017 out of the total 596 companies as well as 31 companies of MAPTAPHUT in 2018 out of the total 112 companies by closed-end questionnaires and documentary study.
The results found that the environmental management’s competence level of SET in the overall market was at the high level. The highest score was agro & food industry sector. and the lowest score was technology sector. In overall SET, the industrial sector gained the closest scores to the averages of SET and might be the representative of listed companies in terms of environment management’s competence level in Thailand. Considering Maptaphut was also high level and higher than SET but less than agro & food industry sector.
By focusing at organizational factors, SET was found that sustainable consumption and production as well as environmental reports were top priorities while operating environmental standard and material flow management factor were second priorities. On Maptaphut was found environmental report was the first priorities while sustainable consumption and production, environmental standard and material flow management factor were second priorities. On the other hand, SDGs and environmental R&D were the least important priorities among factors both of SET and Maptaphut. SDGs however would have been more recognized at the present time.
For environmental management process factors, SET and also Maptaphut hit the highest scores in environmental management factor and corporate environmental values and norms factor. The lowest scores appeared to be environmental relationship with suppliers factor and environmental management accounting factor in both group of study. In corporate stakeholders factor, Maptaphut also gained less scores however analyzing sub-issues in the factor SET and Maptaphut obtained both maximum and the minimum scores. The stakeholders that the market concerned most were consumer and community while labor union and NGOs were the stakeholders that the companies concerned least.
The result of comparative study by using was the average score of the environmental management’s competence level of Maptaphut is higher than SET and SET_Indus at 92% and 81% respectively. Nevertheless t-test Independent at 95% confidence level with the average scores of 88 sub-issues found that 75% and 85% of total sub-issues between Maptaphut and SET as well as SET_Indus were not different.
In overall, Environmental Management of SET and Maptaphut trend to implement more than legal compliances which called proactive environmental management level. However Maptaphut gained higher average scores than SET, so we concluded that Maptaphut might be pressured from external factors about environmental impacts more than SET in order to be in an pollution control area, local people’s polluted health reason, environmental losses and accidents reason and in addition to people participation in environmental movement. For these reasons the business organizations in Maptaphut Industrial Estate would take more concerns in environmental management processes than SET and SET_Indus. |
