This research was a correlational-comparative study. Its objectives were 1) to study the effectiveness of elderly school projection, 2) to study the relationship between psychological and/or situational factors associated with the Buddhist successful aging of elderly, and 3) to indicate the importance predictors and predict values of causal variables in terms of psychological trait, situational factor and psychological state groups toward Buddhist successful aging.
Based on interactionism model, this research employed a multi-stage sampling method. The sample were 395 elderly in Chiang Rai Province, consisted of 200 males (50.60%) and 195 females (49.40%). The average age was 69 years old. The average number of descendants was 2 persons. The average number of close friends was 5 persons. There were 4 groups of variables as follows. 1) Dependent variable group was Buddhist successful aging behavior, consisted of 3 variables, namely, social support giving behavior, Buddhist lifestyle, and Buddhist happiness. 2) Situational factor group consisted of 4 variables, namely, elderly school attendance, family relationship, role model, and social network. 3) Psychological trait group consisted of 5 variables, namely, Buddhist belief and practice, core self-evaluation, generativity, health stress, and depression. 4) Psychological state group consisted of 3 variables, namely, attitudes toward behavior, perceived Buddhist behavioral control, self-efficacy in helping others.
There were 14 measures. Most of the measures were in the form of summated rating scales. Item qualities, e.g., discrimination, and Item-total correlation were computed. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to determine construct validity. The reliability score of each measure ranged between 0.56 to 0.87. Data were analyzed in total sample and several subgroups categorized by biosocial background.
The important findings were as follows.First, the effectiveness of elderly school project was found that school attending elderly reported more social support giving behavior, more Buddhist lifestyles, and more favorable attitudes towards behavior than non-attending school elderly. These results were found in total sample and many subgroups, especially elderly with more close friends. Second, attending school elderly with high generativity and high perceived Buddhist behavioral control reported more social support giving behavior, and more attitudes toward behavior than non-attending school elderly with low generativity and low perceived Buddhist behavioral control. These results were found in some subgroups, especially in male elderly group. Third, the finding in total sample from MRA using 12 variables as predictors were as follows. 1) All six predictors yielded predictive percentage of 42.69% on social support giving behavior. The predictors ordered in descending were perceived Buddhist behavioral control, role model, elderly school attendance, Buddhist belief and practice, family relationship, and self-efficacy in helping others. The predictive percentage range of eight subgroups was between 33.27% and 55.40%. 2) All five predictors yielded predictive percentage of 24.60%% on Buddhist lifestyle. The predictors ordered in descending were family relationship, self-efficacy in helping others, Buddhist belief and practice, role model, and Elderly school attendance. The predictive percentage range of eight subgroups was between 24.26% and 34.71%. 3) All four predictors yielded predictive percentage of 49.68% on Buddhist happiness. The predictors ordered in descending were family relationship, social network, core self-evaluation, and health stress. The predictive percentage range of eight subgroups was between 45.39% and 58.28%.
From this study, there were suggestions for development as follows. First, the research results indicated that the elderly school project is benefit to elderly in several, especially, male elderly, and elderly with less descendants in terms of social support giving behavior, Buddhist lifestyle, and attitudes toward behavior. Second, self-efficacy, perceived Buddhist behavioral control, and attitudes toward behavior should be heightened in order to increase Buddhist successful aging in Thai elderly. Finally, role model for elderly is still one of the important factors affecting attitude, perceived behavioral control, and self-efficacy of the elderly. Thus, good exemplars, especially from significant others in family, community, society, should be promoted. |
