The objectives of this study were to: i) study the patterns of fake news on Facebook; ii) compare the exposure behavior to the fake news among Generations X and Y people; iii) compare the response behaviors of Generation X and Y people; and iv) study the relationship between the exposure behaviour to fake news and the response behaviour to fake news. The questionnaires were applied as a tool for collecting the data regarding the behaviors of exposure and response to fake news from the sample group of 423 Facebook users. The statistics employed for data analysis were mean, standard deviation, and Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient. Along with the number of fake news found on Facebook were collected and classified the type and the content format of fake news. Then the data obtained from the fake news was analyzed thoroughly by the Content Analysis. The study findings revealed that the most of samples were female, more than half of them aged 15-38 years old, generation Y, born in 1982-2005, single, graduated with Bachelor’s degree, and mainly engaged in civil servants and state enterprises. The exposure behaviour to fake news on Facebook was at a “high” level. For the exposure behaviour to fake news, the samples reviewed its rationality before posting their comments, clicking the Like and Share buttons. The news with clear reference source was more preferred than the others. The response behavior to the fake news on Facebook were overall at a “low” level. The sample group also responded to the news with the writing methods in order to encourage them to express their opinions, click the Like and Share buttons at a “moderate” level. While seeing the interesting headlines, they would click the Like and Share buttons immediately and comment as soon as they received the news. They often shared the news with celebrities’ or well-known person’s figure, and often shared the news with statistics or research results immediately without checking the facts at a “low” level. For the content analysis of fake news on Facebook from 102 examples of fake news found between February 2020 and March 2020, it found that the most common type of fake news was 41 deceiving news and the most common fake news content was 32 make up news. It found in the results of hypothesis testing that the Generations X and Y people had no different behaviour in exposure to fake news and response to fake news with statistically significant level at 0.05. There was the relationship between the exposure behaviour to fake news and the response behaviour to fake news. The more the exposure behaviour to fake news increased, the more the response behaviour to fake news would increase accordingly. |
