This study examines the impact of digital technology on economic volatility, also known as the business cycle, by using a famous methodology called the DSGE model. Two major models are constructed, namely the baseline one-sector model and the two-sector model. The baseline one-sector model is constructed to express the reactions of variables to technology, fiscal policy, and monetary policy shocks in both closed and open economies. The two-sector model is formulated by separating the production part of the economy into two sectors, namely the non-digital sector and the digital sector. Also, this hypothetical economy is separated into closed and open economies. In the two-sector model, the effects of digital output on both sectors and the overall economy are identified. The analyses of these models are conducted by using data from Thailand and the Bayesian estimation technique. It is revealed from the baseline one-sector model that in the case of the technology shock, some variables in an open economy are more volatile than in a closed economy. In the case of the government's spending shock, some variables in an open economy are less volatile than those in a closed economy. When it comes to monetary policy shocks, monetary policy contraction has a greater negative impact on economic growth in an open economy. Regarding the two-sector closed economy, it is found that the reactions to the modified form of non-digital technological evolution are more volatile than those to the general form of non-digital technological evolution. Similarly, the general form of digital technology evolution is compared to the modified form of digital technology evolution. It is found that the reactions to the modified form are more volatile than those to the general form. It is also observed that there are effects of technological evolution in the digital sector that spread to the non-digital sector. In the case of a two-sector open economy, which investigates only the effects of the modified form of technological evolution, it is discovered that reactions to the modified form of non-digital technological evolution in an open economy are more volatile than those to the modified form of non-digital technological evolution in a closed economy. Furthermore, it is discovered that reactions to a modified form of digital technological evolution in an open economy are more volatile than reactions to a modified form of digital technological evolution in a closed economy. Similarly, the effects of technological evolution in the digital sector spread to the non-digital sector. Based on the results of the analysis, it is recommended that the government should recognize the effects of technological evolution on the volatility of economic growth, the business cycle in particular, in the context of an open economy. Thus, it should develop a set of policies that encourage both technological development and economic openness in order to reap the greatest benefits. The government should also support the development of technology in the digital sector because it can produce positive effects on both the digital and non-digital sectors. However, the government has to simultaneously prepare projects to stabilize the economy as the digital sector’s technological evolution can exacerbate economic volatility. |
