Abstract

The purposes of this study are twofold: (1) to test the involvement load hypothesis in order to understand how it potentially explains the beginning learners’ learning and recognition of new Japanese vocabulary; and (2) to compare the efficiency levels of “search” and “evaluation”believed to have an effect on these learners’ ability to learn and recognize Japanese new vocabulary. The learners were put into four groups before they were randomly assigned to complete the Task-Induced Involvement Load according to their learning conditions. Before they begin these tasks, they were asked to take a vocabulary pre-test, and immediately after these tasks, they had to take a post-test. After one week lapsed, they were required to retake the same post-test.The results showed that the highest load of involvement had no (significant) effect on the learning and recognition of the new vocabulary among these learners. Instead, the tasks with the moderate degree of need and evaluation had a greater impact on the efficiency of their vocabulary learning and recognition. In addition, given the same involvement for each task, it was found that “evaluation” was more effective than “search” in helping these learners learn and recognize the new vocabulary.
