Abstract
This dissertation includes three empirical essays on logistics performance and economic development. The first essay is related to the linkages of logistics components for trade improvement. In this paper, the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) and its components are used to represent trade facilitation according to the first index published in 2007 until the latest in 2016 through five editions. This research aims to analyze the role of logistics components linked to global exports of agricultural and manufactured products using a gravity model. The main results indicate that any improvement in logistics components is highly significant for enhancing a country’s trade flows, especially exporting countries. In other words, the exporter’s logistics have a greater effect on trade improvement than those of the importer. Interestingly, logistics components are becoming increasingly important to the improvement of trade in agricultural and manufactured products, particularly regarding timeliness and international shipment.
The second essay is about the Roadmap for Integration of ASEAN Logistics Services help to improve logistical capability and trade flows. The potential benefit of the roadmap for trade improvement is investigated using the gravity model, augmented with Logistics Performance Index and its component, focusing on the areas of policy regulations—customs, infrastructure, and logistics competency. The results from the gravity model indicate that logistics performance is becoming increasingly important and any improvement in logistic components is highly significant for increasing trade in the ASEAN Economic Community. Nevertheless, customs procedure efficiency has a small impact on trade enhancement despite producing a better performance, whereas improvements to infrastructure and logistics competency have a greater impact. These findings could help the policymakers of ASEAN member countries in designing an appropriate policy for improving logistical capability to enhance ASEAN competitiveness.
The last essay is about role of the logistics industry in Thailand’s economy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the important role of the logistics industry in Thailand’s economy. Input-output (I-O) analysis is applied to examine the role of the logistics sector and its economic impact on the national economy for the period 1975 to 2010. The results indicate that the logistics sector has difficulty in supporting and boosting other sectors, thereby hindering further national economic development. Moreover, this study considers the logistics sector exogenously in order to examine its economic impact on other sectors in terms of production-inducing effects, logistics supply shortages and sectoral prices. Furthermore, the logistics sector’s contribution to Thailand’s GDP is also evaluated. These key findings will provide guidelines for policymakers to plan and make decisions in formulating industrial policies to improve the logistics industry.
