Abstract: |
This research was an experimental study, aiming at investigating the effectiveness of promoting positive psychology towards elderly care among senior high school students, as well as, examining psycho-social and cause of psychological and situational factors on positive intention towards elder in high school students. This study was post test only with control group design. The total of 472 high school students from six schools with 211 male (44.7%), and 261 female (55.3%) 204 secondary 4 students (43.2%) 268 secondary 5 students (56.8)
This study was post-test only with control group design. The total of 472 students were selected by random assignment. Subjects were randomly assigned into one of the four groups, namely, group 1 with 120 students reading the promote attitude for care toward elder persuasive message and reading optimism persuasive message, group 2 with 118 students reading the promote attitude for care toward elder persuasive message and reading control message (thai products), group 3 with 118 students reading optimism persuasive message and reading control message (learning English), group 4 with 116 students reading control message (thai products) and reading control message (learning English). After 15 minutes of reading the messages, the set of questionnaires were administered to the subjects.
There were 5 groups of variables in this study. The first group interventions consisted of receiving promote attitude for care toward elder persuasive message and optimism persuasive message. Second group was psychological traits consisted of 4 variables, favorable attitudes toward elderly, future orientation – self control, locus of control and social perspective taking. Third group of variables was situational factors, consisting of 4 variables, appropriate family and friends models on intention to care for elderly relatives, love and reasoned child rearing practice, good example on media and support from school. The fourth group was dependent variables, namely an intention to assist toward elder and intention to support others care toward elder. The fifth group was bio-social background of the samples.
The major finding were as follows; First, it was found students who read the promote attitude for care toward elder persuasive message, read optimism persuasive message and high future orientation – self control reported more intention to support others on positive intention towards elder than the ones who did not read the promote attitude for care toward elder persuasive message, did not read optimism persuasive message and low future orientation – self control.
Secondly, psychological traits together with situational factors with the total of 8 variables could account 1) intention to assist toward elder in total group with 47.6%. The important predictors sorted in descending order were favorable attitudes toward elderly, future orientation – self control, appropriate family and friends models on intention to care for elderly relatives and social perspective taking. 2) intention to support others care toward elder in total group with 54.9%. The important predictors sorted in descending order were favorable attitudes toward elderly, social perspective taking and good example from media.
Thirdly, results from path analysis indicated that the manipulated variables directly affected and indirectly affected on intention to care toward elder.
Recommendation, this study found that reading the promote attitude for care toward elder persuasive message and/or read optimism persuasive message could effectively change the student attitude and intention to care toward elder. Therefore, any institution trying to promote positive psychology towards elderly care among senior high school students can apply this reading persuasive message as learning program together with other activities. Moreover, for the future research which involves with the study of attitude or behavioral intention, it is suggested that the
Research from many to cover all regions of Thailand. Or in-depth study in regions with a high number of elderly people other than Bangkok and its surrounding provinces to confirm the resulted findings. And may have to study other variables such as positive psychological capital.Finally, the next research should mix research with qualitative research by using the focus group method or In-Depth Interview method for comprehensive and reliable answers to research questions.
