Abstract: |
This research aims to study about the experiences of illegal Thai workers in South Korea, to study the struggle of illegal Thai worker during their stay in South Korea, and to study the struggle for survival in the covid-19 pandemic of illegal Thai worker during their stay in Thailand; a case study of Udon Thani province. The research uses a qualitative research method with an in-depth interview from 3 groups: 1) the illegal Thai worker who returning to Thailand, 2) the public health officers, 3) local peoples. The research has found that Thai worker during their stay in South Korea tried to get as much money as possible by changing jobs till satisfaction. They usually sent money back to their families. In the meantime, modern telecommunication technologies were utilized to keep in touch with their families. However, with the advent of covid-19 pandemic, they monitored news from both Thailand and South Korea and using them as factor for decision-making on whether or not they should return to Thailand. Referring to their struggle while staying in Thailand, Three groups coming home in different periods faced with different situations. First was the group returning to Thailand before the exist of state-controlled measures. Second was the group returning to their home-country at the beginning period of state-controlled measures. Third was the group made a homecoming after Thai people becoming familiar with the covid-19 pandemic situation and their moods were calming down. However, the first group were faced with heavy criticisms from society, due to the government’s unclear and delay in determining measures to control the homecoming labors. But when they were back to their hometown, the public health officers and local peoples understood in the situation and believed that they were just Thai people who wanted to come back home, not vector of disease. The research suggested that the government should determine clear measures to support the voyagers who were from high-risk areas, along with guidelines for the operation-level officers so that they could be ready in both public health knowledge and equipment. In terms of the labors, they should always monitor the news, and cooperate with the government to prevent the virus pandemic.
